/ les origines : a marriage, a manufacturer.
de tomaso automobili is an italian marque founded in 1959, by argentine racer and visionary alejandro de tomaso, alongside his wife (and business partner), isabelle.
from inception, ford powertrains formed the mechanical core of the marque. in 1970, following ford’s aborted acquisition of ferrari, lee iacocca and alejandro de tomaso established a partnership that placed majority ownership with ford through 1974—an alliance that yielded the pantera programme (1970–1993). over subsequent decades, the house drew upon a rare circle of collaborators: gian paolo dallara in chassis development; tom tjaarda, marcello gandini, and giorgetto giugiaro in coachwork; and carroll shelby, peter brock, and frank williams in motorsport.
de tomaso was also a buyer of houses. in the 1960-'70's it acquired marques such as ghia, vignale, innocenti, moto guzzi, benelli and owned maserati (arguably, alejandro's first employer) from 1975-'93.
sadly, the brand went dormant after alejandro's passing in 2003.
/ la renaissance, the return of the marque.
in 2014 ideal team ventures, acquired the rights to the marque and entrusted our founder, ryan berris, with its revival. a period of study followed: the history, then the strategy. the work was done quietly, for some years, before it was shown.
/ what was undertaken, stood.
the revival was presented in 2019 at the goodwood festival of speed, with the p72 — a time machine in honour of de tomaso's original, 1965 p70 racing car in a tribute of the marque’s 60th anniversary.
since the revival, demand has exceeded the run of p72's.

we began with a blank sheet, and the rights to an extinct marque. from that, a house was raised in the old name — the cars, the standard.

the story
/ after the p70.
to mark the sixtieth anniversary of the marque, the p72 was presented at the 2019 goodwood festival of speed alongside the duke of richmond—the inaugural work of the revival.

a grand tourer of the present, it keeps the manners of the nineteen-sixties—proportion, purpose, a certain reserve—and gives them the means of this time.
the p72 is the first car of the revival: made to the standard the house intends to keep, and in honour of the car that preceded it.
the design

the p72 takes its proportions from the le mans prototypes of the nineteen-sixties—the sport 1000, the sport 2000, and the p70, among the initial cars de tomaso developed, and gives them the means of the present.

the p72 form is made to last. the surfaces are considered, the volumes held in proportion; nothing is asked of the eye that the structure cannot keep. the engineering is of a finished order—advanced where it must be, quiet where it may be. from every aspect the car is the same instrument: powerful, and composed.
